1/30/19: Humans of Florida
Last weekend, if ya know, ya know, I broke my wrist. It was dramatic and terrible and I couldn't shoot but I overcame it and eventually conquered my final photo assignment for my Color Photography class in Fall semester 2018.
Here's the "Humans of Florida" I captured, along with their names and stories. Enjoy!
Michael
“I just moved here a couple months ago from Kentucky. I need a new license because I can’t do anything properly here anymore without a Florida license, but I forgot to make an appointment. Stupid right? You live and learn. So, I moved here for my aunt. Unfortunately she just had back surgery so I packed everything up with my son and moved here. I must say, I love Florida. I love the beaches, the open skies and the weather. My son, Michael Jr. and I love going to the beach and kicking around a soccer ball. I just got a new tattoo of his birthday yesterday.”
Celine
“I’m from central Florida, a small city in Orlando. It’s boring there and I have more friends in Tallahassee. I try to work really hard on my hair and not really my makeup as much. I work early shifts here so I don’t always care how I look but I like it when my hair looks pretty. I may work at a dollar store but it’s still nice to sometimes put in some effort.”
Harry
“I’m from Florida, always have been. I’ve lived in Hollywood for a while, but all I do is work here, nothing too exciting. I do construction work, but I can’t stand it. Unfortunately, I chose not to go to college when I graduated high school. I got way too stoned and stupid. My parents thought I had potential, but I disagreed. My nephew also goes to Florida State, it gives me a taste of what I could have had, but I’m happy he’s happy.”
Delilah
"I may be working at a DMV, but it’s been a fulfilling past 15 years. I get to see all different kinds of people, every single day. Whether it’s a brief interaction or I’m helping them with a particular problem for hours, it’s always something different everyday. I do probably have to say that my favorite thing about working here is now, I’m the one in control. I’ve moved up and up in my position and now I get to say I’m in control and I really like that."
Jarvis
“Go Noles baby! So, I cook. I prep the dough here at the pizza restaurant. I’ve always wanted to be a chef. Not necessarily a pizza chef behind a steamy counter but I don’t ever see myself doing anything else. I went to school to Cordon Bleu and got my degree. I thought I’d be working at a high end hotel or a fancy restaurant in Miami, but I have no complaints. I really enjoy the people I work with. Ever since I was little, I’ve always been a Seminoles fan, just like my uncle. We don’t have to talk about the football team right now, but the history is legendary and I’m still proud.”
Monique
“I’m from Orlando and I just recently moved here with my daughter. Collectively, we like it a lot more. I mostly did it for my job, but also to find my daughters a better elementary school. They’re two beautiful young girls and they light up my life. I actually have to go pick them up from school soon. They seem to like this new school a lot better and seem a lot happier, that’s all I could ever want.”
Brian
“I’m a graduate student for photography. I’ve always wanted to grad school right after undergrad but I’m finally doing it now. I’m trained as a painter and sculptor so photography is very new to me, it’s different. I went to undergrad 20 years ago in Chicago at the Art Institute of Chicago, but I’m from Atlanta. It’s funny you want to get a picture of my hands, because all I have are scars everywhere.”
Bruno
“My name’s Bruno, just like Bruno Mars. I’m not good at English, I’m very new here. Brazil is where I came from. I needed a new something, I need fun. I have been in Brazil my whole life, but my best friends and I came and visited America so I decided to stay. I really like music. I like the people here, everyone is different.”
